Remaining single for the past several years has given me the capacity to focus on my practice and evolve as a woman, mother and artist. That being said; I recognize that I have been working at a reckless pace and a season of incubation is in order. Over the past year and a half, I have tackled no less than three solo exhibitions, three group exhibitions (two of which I both curated and featured indoor/outdoor installations & sculptures), one museum event and a retrospective memoir including over fifty of my original works in downtown Calgary. I have sold over thirty original works of art during this madness, landed my first international commission and recently accepted a position on the board of directors for the Women’s Art Museum of Canada.
The piece below is an act of gratitude, worship and humility; none of this “success’ is mine to claim .. they are blessings. I do work tirelessly each and everyday from the moment I wake until my head hits the pillow, but my body, mind and the opportunities that presented themselves are all gifts. They came without seeking, without application and in response to the work God allows me to create. I am at his mercy with each and every element within what I create. From the beautiful individuals I meet, to the supplies I am given, to nature itself … I never know if a given idea will be realized, but what I do know beyond a shadow of doubt is that when I let go and allow a given work to become what it is meant to be, rather than what I would have it be - the results always surpass and are occasionally breathtaking. Do not misunderstand; work extremely hard, acquire every skill possible, acquire daily discipline and technique, push the limits of your body, mind and spirit … but when the moment to comes - let it all go. Authentic expression flows naturally forth from within your spirit onto whatever canvas necessary when we give permission.
Our legacy is never that which we do for ourselves, but what we do for others. Do not deprive the world of your authentic self; let your gifts shine in whatever direction they are meant to embrace, whether this be in the field of law, science, sports, trades, etc … each and every life is a work of art. We cannot control the outcome, but we can render and prepare the palette for unique masterpiece. Our legacy is never that which we do for ourselves, but what we do for others. This remains the aim beneath, beyond and within my work both in studio and out.
Thank you as always for your patronage, love and support.
