WHYTE MOTH I is the first of an annual group arts exhibition exploring the intersection of the urban and the natural landscape within Alberta. What is our relationship to the wilderness? Why are we drawn to its inherent beauty? And how can we foster a culture of appreciation and coexistence, rather than dominance or suppression?

While there are many aspects of our history that can be celebrated; there exists a simultaneous trajectory of trauma, destruction and mistaken attempts to control, rather than engage with nature or the people who understood its ways. We so often dismiss, rather than embrace, that which does not fit within the realm of our carefully manicured lives. We run from the spaces of silence, observation and stillness; the very cornerstones of all mankind’s greatest discoveries and achievements.

Who We Are

Whyte Moth I features the work of a new tide of artists looking to challenge the concept of what it means to be creative. From original installations, both indoors and out, to sculpture, living performance, photography and drawings/paintings, each and every work pushes the boundaries of the familiar, more “commercially viable’ product, into new realms of possibility.

Sensory Artwalk

Guests will also be invited to explore the extensive property where philanthropist, art collector and geneticist Jay Cross and physiotherapist Jo Supplie Kammann have been tackling the installation of a ‘Sensory Artwalk.’ Rather than providing guests with a guided map or trail head; patrons are invited to explore the landscape at their leisure. All the material used within the work is from the land and will gradually be folded back into the landscape over time. The viewer is called to appreciate the raw beauty of the Alberta landscape, from the mountain vistas, fields and forests, to the banks of the Sheep River itself.

10% OF ALL PROCEEDS WILL BE DONATED TO THE YELLOWSTONE TO YUKON CONSERVATION INITIATIVE.
